Judges 2:10-11 is a very sad passage to me. The first generation that came into the Promised Land had seen God’s power, seen His miracles. They followed the LORD. But somehow, their faith wasn’t handed off to their children. The next generation didn’t know and didn’t remember anything about God, and started worshipping other gods and living like the idolatrous nations around them. Later, Judges 21:25b says, “People did whatever they felt like doing.”
It’s crucial that we remember who God is and what He has done for us in the past, and that we pass that on to the succeeding generations. And it’s crucial that the next generations have their own personal encounter with God. It’s our job and privilege to pass faith on, and they have to receive it for themselves. They can’t live on their parents’ or grandparents’ faith. That would be like expecting my child to be nourished by a meal I ate. No, they have to experience faith, taste it and chew it and digest it for themselves.
And it’s incumbent on all generations to remember.
