Does it matter what you believe? Some people say it does; others say it doesn’t, as long as you’re a nice, sincere person and follow your beliefs consistently. Whatever you want to be true, is. Like beauty, it’s all in the eye of the beholder.
Several years ago my husband and I were in a little café in the Old City in Jerusalem. A lady was holding forth, deliberating with a group of local men. She stated that she accepted all forms of spiritual belief as true. One of the men spoke up. “If everything is true, then nothing is true.”
Hmm. Let’s think about that, and follow it to its logical conclusion. If everything is true, then everything is equally valid. There is nothing that is absolute, nothing that is higher than or superior to another. Nothing is inherently right, or intrinsically wrong. Nothing is more valuable or desirable than another. Honesty is no more desirable than deceit. There is no right way or wrong way to treat other people.
Is this true? Is it really “Anything goes”? I think everyone agrees that there are certain things that are inherently either right or wrong. For example, stealing is universally considered to be wrong, as evidenced by laws against theft wherever you go. This is and of itself is an admission that there is a “capital T Truth” out there which delineates the difference. Two plus two always equals four, whether we want it to equal three or five or not.
There is a “capital T Truth”, a reality that can be known if we are willing to look for it. Don’t settle for anything less.
