Do you ever feel reluctant to do something God has called you to do because you feel inadequate, or feel like someone else could do it better? I’ve been there.
In the King James Version, 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” That sounds like we’re supposed to study hard and have it all together, doesn’t it? That’s the way it was explained to me when I was growing up. I looked at other translations to check. The NASB version, as well as several others, says, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God….”
The thing that sticks out to me is “present yourself to God.” God isn’t looking for the smartest, the most talented, or the most professional. In fact, He specializes in using the “Nobodies” of the world so that no one can boast or become prideful (1 Corinthians 1:27-29). God will get all the credit. The thing He wants is our hearts, faithful to Him, trusting Him to do what only He can do. He wants our “Yes, Lord” to walk with him, like when God sent Ananias to pray for Paul (Acts 9). Even though he was afraid, Ananias presented himself to God in faithful, loving obedience and went to Saul.
Remember the thing God wants is not that you would score a 10 out of 10 on the task, but that you would give yourself, your heart, to Him. Walk with Him into the adventure. And think of this – perhaps the thing God really wants to accomplish is different, maybe even radically so, than what we think He’s doing.
God can do more with a faithful servant that is untrained than with a trained servant that is unfaithful.
