Several years ago, I was going through a hard time. Part of the hardness involved looking at myself and the things I’d been taught as truth, even questioning whether I truly had a relationship with Jesus. Before this began, the Lord had been kind enough to let me know that a time of shaking was ahead, so that what remained would be unshakable (Hebrews 12:27). The part of the faulty support structure based on legalism had to be removed, so that truth remained.
So there I was, stretched thin and worn to a frazzle, watching “Napoleon Dynamite” with my teenage son. When we got to the prom dance scene, the chorus of the song “Time After Time” filled the room and tears popped out and ran down my face.
If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I’ll be waiting,
Time after time
If you’re lost you can look and you will find me
Time after time
If you fall, I will catch you, I’ll be waiting,
Time after time
God can use anything to communicate with us, and I believe he used those words to tell me that he was there with me, and that he would always be there with me, time after time. (And I’d never even liked the song, even back in the 80’s when it was such a huge hit, by the way.)
Through that time of shaking, God began to remove those faulty support structures of legalism, and I’ve come to a greater understanding of his grace. Not grace to do just anything I want to do; because all I want to do in response to his grace is to love him and follow him. But when I fail, and I do, I can rest assured on his promises that Jesus is always interceding for me, pleading my case, because he gave his life to pay my debt. I’ll leave it to you to look at a few scriptures to clarify: Hebrews 7:25, Hebrews 6:17-20, Hebrews 10:23, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, 2 Timothy 2:13, 1 John 1:9, Revelation 19:11.
If you’re lost, you can look and you will find him, time after time. If you fall, he will catch you, he will be waiting, time after time.
