Tomorrow is Easter Sunday. John 19:30 records the last words spoken by Jesus on the cross, “It is finished.” The Greek word used here is teleo, or tetelestai, which meant accomplished, finished, fulfilled completed, paid, perfected, performed.
So what does that mean for us? “In the first-century Greco-Roman world, the term “tetelestai” was commonly used in various contexts, such as in business transactions to indicate that a debt had been paid in full. This cultural understanding enriches the theological implications of Jesus’ words, emphasizing that the debt of sin has been fully satisfied through His sacrifice.” (Source: Bible Hub, lexical discussion of “It is finished.”)
What that means to me is that salvation was achieved only by Jesus’ sinless life and His death on the cross. There’s nothing I can possibly add to what He did. I can’t earn it, because the best I can do is completely inadequate; but what He did is more than adequate. It’s His righteousness, not mine, that covers me. His resurrection from the dead is Father God’s seal of approval of His payment.
I hope this Easter we will all have a deeper appreciation of what Jesus did for us.
