Same Old Thing?

Some people say that all religions are the same, and what’s important is that you’re sincere in your beliefs.  Just try to be a good person, and all will go well.

But real Christianity is not at all like the others.  The first difference is that from the start Christianity acknowledges that we CAN’T be good people.  (Besides, who defines what “good” is?  Different people have different definitions of good.)  We need major help because we can’t do it on our own.

Greek mythology tells us the story of Sisyphus.  He had offended the gods, and for his punishment he was doomed to spend eternity rolling an immense boulder up a hill only for it to roll backwards every time he neared the top.  It’s the definition of futility.  Most religions end up being a single-handed attempt to satisfy requirements that can never be met.

The second difference is that Christians believe that God knew we could never perform well enough to satisfy Him, so He Himself did it for us.  When Jesus came to earth that first Christmas He lived the perfect life that we could never live.  Our only tasks are to trust in what Jesus did, especially His death, burial, and resurrection; and to cooperate with Him as we allow His Holy Spirit to fill us and to have control over more and more of our lives.  He changes us from the inside out to become more like Himself, naturally.

We’re about to head into Thanksgiving and Christmas.  I hope that every day of this holiday season we remember what a wonderful gift we’ve been given, and the wonderful God Who came to bring us into relationship with Himself.
