Palm Sunday

Today is Palm Sunday, the day that Jesus entered Jerusalem. The crowds were ecstatic, and welcomed Him. But only a few days later, their shouts went from “Hosanna!” to “Crucify Him!” Quite an about face. What caused them to go from love to loathing, like hot and cold water?

The people expected that Jesus was coming to throw out the Romans and to set up His kingdom. He would rule over them just like King David did all those years ago, bringing back glory and prestige to Israel. No more being trampled underfoot.

But that time, they got something they weren’t expecting. Instead of a conquering king, they got a suffering servant. Instead of dominance, they got humility.

We, too, have expectations of Jesus. Some believe He was a good man; some believe He’s like the doting old grandfather who winks at our sin and pats us on the head; still others believe He’s a harsh tyrant, ready to hurl lightning bolts at us for the least little misstep.

Rather than figure out who we want God to be, we have to let Him be who He is. Throughout the Bible He tells us about Himself. Some may say that these are conflicting descriptions. He says He is holy, righteous, and metes out justice. He’s also merciful, gracious, compassionate, and loving. The Bible says He is all of these.

So check your expectations of Jesus and see if they match what scripture says about Him, what He says about Himself. Welcome the suffering servant and the soon coming king.
