Walk the Talk

Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times; if necessary, use words.”  Some interpret this to mean we don’t have to speak the Good News of Jesus, emphasizing His call to love one another.  Others disagree, saying that our first duty is to speak, sometimes even viewing the love aspects of the Gospel as peripheral.

I believe speaking God’s truth and living a life of love and integrity are both necessary parts of preaching the Gospel.  There’s the old saying, “Your actions speak so loud I can’t hear what you’re saying.”  My words can become meaningless if they aren’t backed up by who I am and how I live my life.  At worst case a disconnect between the two can make a mockery of my words.

Yes, we need to speak the truth of the Gospel.  But make every effort to live a life that lines up with what we say we believe, and that we live as reflections of the One we follow (1 John 2:6).
