What is strength? Some would define it as being able to get your way, without letting anyone stand in your way. Some people use intimidation, bullying, lying, and manipulation to achieve their goals and are viewed as “can do” kind of people.
I believe true strength is demonstrated when that ability to accomplish a goal is harnessed with the qualities Paul speaks of in Philippians 4:5. Most Bible translations use the words gentleness or reasonableness. The Amplified Bible translates it as gentle spirit, and further defines it as graciousness, unselfishness, mercy, tolerance, and patience.
True strength is found in sober (as in wise or prudent) self-control in our dealings with others. This is not weakness. As Paul reminds us, the Lord is near; and if we claim to follow Him, our heart’s desire should be to honorably represent Him, and to please Him.
