Jesus said, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:28-30).
A yoke allowed two animals (usually oxen) to pull a heavy load efficiently. A former pastor of mine who was a wood worker explained that when a carpenter made a yoke he did a custom fit for the particular pair of oxen that would use that yoke, not just a one-size-fits-all design. God relates with us as individuals, right where we are, as He walks with us through our growth process. He created us, knows us intimately (Psalms 139), and has a tailor-made destiny in mind for us (Ephesians 2:10).
Paul urged us to live by the Holy Spirit and keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). How do we do that? If we start every day giving ourselves to Him, He’ll give us the strength we need, and grow us into who we really are, who He designed us to be. When we walk in step with the Holy Spirit in the tailor-made yoke He designed, He’ll be there to bear the burdens that we can’t. Then we’ll experience His rest.
