We’re celebrating Independence Day. Cookouts, fireworks, and family reunions will take place all across the country. We’ll remember how blessed we are to live in this country, where we have freedom to live as we see fit. This isn’t something to take for granted, since there are many places in the world where this isn’t true.
Americans are known for our independent spirit, individualism, and drive. In general, we’re a nation of go-getters, shakers and movers. The self-made man is praised, and achievement is valued. A “can do” attitude is considered a virtue. We can handle any problem, any situation if we just stick to it.
Whether we like it or not, though, all of us will run into situations (sometimes of our own doing) where we’re completely over heads. We have no idea of what to do; and sometimes, there’s nothing we can do. Some people say, “Just listen to yourself”, as if we can always figure it out. But I like the way Frank Peretti said it in his video “The Chair”: “Why should I listen to myself? I’m the one who got me into this situation!” We’re not always so great at problem solving.
Solomon, the wisest human being who ever lived, said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6). Later, Jesus said, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:4-5).
The best way we can live our lives is not in total independence, but by living in dependence on God. The only way to true happiness and freedom is in letting Him be in charge of every part of our lives, trusting His heart of love for us.
